Welcome to my Northern California Self-Designed Experience page! Here, you will learn about my experience exploring the Bay Area and surrounding regions through travel, cultural observation, and personal reflection. This journey gave me the opportunity to better understand regional differences in lifestyle, environment, infrastructure, and professional culture while experiencing a part of the United States very different from both Dubai and the Midwest. Along the way, I gained new perspectives, explored unfamiliar environments, and became more intentional and observant in how I approach travel and learning experiences. I am excited to share what I learned and how this experience contributed to my growth as a Global Citizen Scholar.
My Experience
During this Self-Designed Experience, I traveled across Northern California and the Bay Area to explore regional lifestyle, environment, infrastructure, and culture from a perspective different from both Dubai and the Midwest. The experience involved visiting major cities, scenic areas, universities, public spaces, and natural locations while also spending time with people familiar with the local professional and social environment.
One of the biggest things I learned from this experience was how strongly geography and environment can influence daily life. Compared to the environments I have previously lived in, California felt much more connected to outdoor spaces, public activity, and nature. Whether it was parks, hiking areas, waterfronts, or open public spaces, there was a stronger balance between urban development and the surrounding environment. Visiting places such as Stanford University and exploring areas around Lake Tahoe further reinforced this observation.
Another important part of the experience was gaining exposure to the Bay Area’s professional culture through conversations and interactions with people working in technology and startup environments. Coming directly from a co-op rotation, it was interesting to observe differences in work schedules, pace, and lifestyle compared to what I had previously experienced. These interactions gave me a broader perspective on how professional culture can vary significantly depending on region and industry.
This experience impacted me by making me more observant and intentional when exploring new places. It also helped expand my understanding of how lifestyle, work culture, and environment shape people’s priorities and routines. Overall, the experience strengthened my awareness of regional and cultural differences within the United States and encouraged me to approach future travel and experiences with a more reflective mindset.
